Career Discovery – Computer Science and Robotics
In today’s rapidly evolving digital world, equipping our students with computational thinking and technical skills is not just an option—it’s a necessity. Seattle Public School’s programs are designed to inspire elementary students to become not just consumers of technology but creators and innovators shaping the 21st century.
For the 2024-25 school year, we are bringing coding to life during Hour of Code in over 90 elementary classrooms at 35 schools during Computer Science Education Week (Dec 9th – Dec 13th). And with 50 teachers already signed up for specialized training with BootUp PD, we are working to integrate computer science across our schools, building educator capacity in teaching computational thinking.
Why Computer Science Matters:
- Early Exposure: Research shows that children form career interests by age 10. Introducing computer science at the elementary level sets a foundation for success in any future career path.
- Tech Hub Advantage: Living in a tech hub like Seattle offers our students unparalleled opportunities. With the majority of high-paying, future jobs requiring tech skills, our mission is to prepare students to thrive in this city and in this economy.
- Empowerment Through Innovation: We aim for every student to see themselves as capable creators and innovators, ready to tackle challenges and engage with digital technology confidently.
Get Involved:
- Parents, PTAs, and Corporate Partners all help SPS make computer science a priority for our students. From volunteering and guest-speaking, to financial support that helps get resources and materials to our students, your voice and contributions are what keep 21st Century learning alive.
